Easy Postpartum Turmeric Dahl

This yummy dahl is a family favourite which makes it a perfect postpartum meal, as it’s super nourishing for mum and the kids will 9/10 like it too! Packed with digestive warming spices and bone broth, as well as being an easy to digest meal with it being soft and warm, it really is a lovely dish for postpartum. I try to use organic where I can, and usually add veggies from the garden, so just whatever is in season! I also soak the lentils prior so it makes for a quick dinner once I’m ready to cook. You can soak in the morning and leave for the day, but if you forget, an hour will do.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of red lentils

  • Water for soaking

  • 4 cups of Water for cooking

  • 50 grams Butter

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 2 tsp Fresh or ground turmeric (fresh is best!)

  • 2 tsp Fresh or ground ginger (fresh is best)

  • 1 tsp Cumin

  • 1 tsp Paprika

  • 1 tsp Ground coriander

  • A few grinds of Pepper

  • Seasonal Veggies—Courgette, Mushroom, Spinach etc

  • 500 grams Organic Chicken Broth

  • 2 Tbsp Coconut Cream

  • 1/2 tsp Salt

  • Coconut or Dairy Greek Yoghurt

  • Fresh Coriander

How To:

  • At least an hour before cooking, rinse the lentils well and then soak them in water. I put enough water that it covers the lentils by a 1/3. This is to help soften them for good digestion and to make it quick to cook!

  • When you’re ready to start cooking, leave the lentils a little longer, and in the meantime, get a large pot and add butter, garlic, and all the spices but DO NOT ADD THE SALT YET. Sauté the garlic and spices in the butter on a low to medium heat until you’ve made a paste.

  • When your paste is ready, add the veggies (except spinach as you can add that closer to the end) and cook them for a bit in the spices

  • When you’re ready to add the lentils, drain them and then add to the spices with the cups of water and chicken broth

  • Bring them to the boil, then let them simmer for a while on a low to medium heat until they look soft and cooked, stirring frequently. It takes about 10-15 mins for them to be cooked if they have been soaked.

  • Once they look cooked, add some coconut cream and salt to taste. If you add salt before the lentils are cooked, it will take AGES for them to cook, as it makes them hard.

  • If you want to add spinach, add it at the end and let it soften.

  • Feel free to adapt by using different spices or adding different veggies.

Serve: We like to serve with Greek yoghurt and fresh coriander. Sometimes we add extra butter too!

Enjoy!
